The 5 Fundamentals - Keys to Success

Initiative: Doing task without being told.

DQ: What are 3 levels of obedience?

Teachable: Willingness to learn new concepts and having an attitude of a learner.

DQ: What is important about being teachable in relation to sports and life?

Initiative the third key component is, initiative is vital for teams to be unified, teams that exercise this key component demonstrate it by going beyond the call of duty practicing harder and longer without the input of outside sources, they are self motivated and when a team has initiative it helps the over goal to be accomplished more efficiently. The writer of this document understands this from personal experience in receiving an athletic scholarship, the writer spent extra long hours training to prepare for the opportunity that would come when recruited for college. The hard work paid off in the form of getting an education, people who have initiative demonstrate motivation to work to reach the desired destiny.

Teachable the fourth key component is for team members to be unified, which is basically a willingness to learn new things. Team members who are teachable normally have an attitude of a learner. When a team has the attitude to want to learn and improve it makes the process of unity much smoother.

Heart the fifth fundamental key, Webster’s concise dictionary (2000) defines” heart as feeling as compassion, earnest desire, or deep emotion regarded as emanating from the heart”. Heart is the effort; hustle and dedication that’s needed to carry a team to victory. If the heart stops everything else stops as well. The human heart must be maintained by exercising this vital muscle and eating the right things to keep the body healthy. In order to keep the heart of passion from stopping, team members must expect all members to give one hundred percent effort, hustle and dedication. Unified teams must take care of one another and encourage one another to always give their best for the team. When everyone cares for one another they become passionate and excited about their goal. When all seven key components have been successfully implemented a unified team will be produced.

The 5 Fundamentals - Keys to Success

Fundamentals: Practice to the point where you don’t have to think about the skill.

DQ: John 3:16 What does this verse have to do with fundamentals?

DQ: II Timothy 3:16-17 How is this verse a key fundamental of being a Christian?

DQ: Hebrews 11:1 Why is faith vital to the Christian faith?

Attitude: Pattern of thinking, attitude determine your altitude

DQ: Galations 5:22 what does this verse have in common with attitude?

DQ: Philippians 4:8 according to this verse how should one think?

DQ: Ecclesiates 3:12-13 according to this scripture how should one think?

Fundamentals is the third key component, fundamentals are things you do daily without having to thinking about them. The new international Webster’s concise dictionary (2000) defines fundamentals as “Anything that serves as the foundation of a system, as a truth, law or principle” (p. 287). Fundamentals are like the foundation for a skill, and a beginning point and in the case of sports the fundamentals must be in place by every member to have a unified team. Fundamentals are the basics that all must have to experience success, a characteristic of a unified team is they practice the basic fundamentals very well, fundamentals is that skill you use so much that you don’t have to think about what you are doing. For example when a basketball player plays in a position where they are the primary dribbler they have become so skilled, that its like second nature to them, all the movements involved in dribbling has been practiced so much that they don’t have to think about how their wrist has to be relax, fingers form a suction cup effect round the ball, and the ball is pushed out in front to allowing themselves to go fast without thinking about the mechanics of this skill. The basic fundamentals in basketball are as follow dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and defense. When teams are fundamentally sound in these areas they will experience success.

Attitude the fourth key component, the new international Webster’s concise dictionary (2000) Defined Attitude as “State of the mind behavior or conduct as indicating ones feeling, opinion or purpose”. (p.46). Attitude can be positive or negative we can reveal our attitude in our body language, I believe we say more in our body language than what we actually say with our words. Attitudes are revealed in our facial expressions, tone of voice, and our thoughts. However when a team is positive to one another they will produce synergy that brings success. A team with a positive attitude thinks and believes they can accomplish any task at hand. Maxwell (2002) states, “The best teams does not always win it’s usually the team that gets along the best” (p. 62). The writer of this document believes when a team get along it allows the team to bond and when the team bonds enthusiasm comes and when enthusiasm comes is fuel for a positive attitude.
